Finding Your Edge
A strategy without an edge is just hope with a chart.
What Is a Trading Edge?
An edge means that over a large sample of trades — 50, 100, 200 — your strategy produces more profit than loss. Not on every trade. Not even on most trades. But enough, with enough reward relative to risk, that the maths works in your favour consistently.
Expectancy = (Win Rate × Avg Win) − (Loss Rate × Avg Loss). A strategy with a 40% win rate and 1:3 R:R has positive expectancy. A strategy with a 65% win rate and 1:0.8 R:R does not. Run this calculation on your last 20 trades before assuming your strategy has an edge.
Edge comes from confluence — multiple signals aligning at the same time. A single RSI reading is not an edge. An RSI signal at a key S/R level, aligned with the higher timeframe trend, confirmed by volume, at a smart money order block — that is an edge. The more layers that align, the higher the probability.
You cannot know whether your strategy has edge from 10 trades. Markets are noisy. You need 50–100 trades in similar conditions before the signal-to-noise ratio is meaningful. This is why a trade journal is non-negotiable — it is how you measure your edge over time.
- Edge = positive expectancy over a large sample size. Not every trade being a winner.
- Confluence creates edge — multiple aligned signals dramatically increase probability.
- You cannot know your edge without data. Track every trade from day one.
- A 40% win rate with 1:3 R:R outperforms a 65% win rate with 1:0.8 R:R every time.
