Why Technical Analysis Works
TA is not magic. It works because human psychology is consistent — and markets are made of humans.
The Core Premise
Markets move based on the collective decisions of millions of traders — most of whom are driven by the same handful of emotions: fear, greed, hope, and regret. These emotions produce predictable, recurring patterns in price data. Technical analysis is the art of reading those patterns before the crowd acts on them.
Three fundamental beliefs underpin all of technical analysis:
Every piece of information — news, fundamentals, sentiment, macroeconomics — is already reflected in the current price. You cannot gain an edge by reading the news faster. The chart is the sum of all available information at any given moment.
This is why TA traders focus on what price is doing rather than why it might be doing it. The reason matters less than the direction and the structure.
Once a trend is established — upward, downward, or sideways — it is more likely to continue than to reverse. This is not mysticism. It reflects the reality that the conditions producing a trend (buy pressure, institutional positioning, macro tailwinds) take time to change.
The trader's job is to identify the trend early, enter in its direction, and hold until the evidence of a change is clear — not to predict when it will end.
Human psychology does not change. The same emotions — fear at lows, greed at highs — produce the same patterns repeatedly across different markets and different time periods. Chart patterns that worked in 2017 work in 2024 because the same emotional responses create the same price shapes.
This is why pattern recognition has enduring value: the patterns are not random — they are the footprints of predictable human behaviour.
- TA works because human psychology is consistent — fear and greed create repeating patterns in price.
- All known information is already priced in. Focus on what price is doing, not why.
- Trends are more likely to continue than reverse — trade with the trend, not against it.
- No indicator or pattern works 100% of the time. TA gives you probabilities, not certainties.
